.. well, for most students, anyway. And certainly not for Daniel himself, who has been going through guiding the training today in his karate gi like showing skin in the middle of a dojo yard he had to shovel the snow out of is totally normal. The man isn't even wearing shoes. It's one of the small benefits of being a coldblood, Daniel has found - it means that he doesn't get cold, even when he doesn't bundle up for training.
But after having gone through some defensive moves with some of the students, Daniel finds himself wandering around the dojo during the break, finding Clarke sitting on the steps that lead to the inside dojo - and he moves over to sit down next to her, an easy smile on the man's face. He likes making small talk with his students, really, or even just
fussing over themchecking in on them. ]So.. I hope the past few months have been relatively alright to you here?
[ It occurs to him now that he hasn't really asked her about that recently. And sure, Clarke has seemed okay, but you never know for sure in this sort of place what people have gone through. ]
no subject
she was so used to needing to have a weapon on hand with how things were back home so it nice to learn something different that didn't have her relying on the former as much. she is just seated on the steps but she just smiles back as he sits next to her] Yeah, these last few months have been alright, not as bad as it could have been anyway.

Where outside, leaned against the wall surrounding the perimeter of the home, is Robby. He's joined by his omen, a shadowy figure as per usual, and if Mister LaRusso starts to focus better at where the boy is, he'll see some things beside where his student half-sits with his arms folded: there's a skateboard beside him, and also....another skateboard. Two skateboards. Weird, right?
At least there's Robby, looking in a good mood despite the cold, a smile on his face as Mister LaRusso approaches. He speaks up once he's close enough. ]
Hey. No trouble on the way?
[ Always good to know if there's beasts lurking around, and all. ]
no subject
Still, he doesn't seem too worried by the time he shows up. He's done so many crazy things in this place, surely he can survive this too.
.. even though his suspicions sure are being confirmed when he spots that second skateboard.
Uh-huh, Robby. Hmm-mm. You sure this isn't some prank? Mister LaRusso over here has enough faith in you to assume it isn't, but there's a tiny bit of doubt now he's actually seeing the plan being laid out like this in front of his eyes..
The fact he's catching on may be very obvious too from the way he glances at that skateboard, but then his gaze finally shifts over to the boy instead. ]
No, it was fine. [ But will he be fine now. Clearly no beast is a greater threat than potentially breaking a hip.. or a knee.. ] I guess it was my turn to come over here anyway, since you're usually the one making the trek.
[ Look, he's even being friendly! Amicable! Despite what's hanging over Daniel's head here.. ]
I see you're prepared though.
[ HE SEES THOSE TWO SKATEBOARDS...
And, no, Daniel didn't bring protection, okay. He genuinely couldn't find any of that stuff here in Trench, and he sure doesn't have a girlfriend conjuring it all up for him. :( ]

( so after a chat with rose, jinx's been wandering almost obsessively as to what she can do about this valentine's day holiday that's coming up. she was told flowers, balloons, and chocolates are usually the go-to thing, but like rose, she wants to go bigger. last month, she recalls something about a carnival and that seems like a good place for a second date. jinx went to the festival only once, sadly enough, but she had a good time then. (and her former self went there too, but not that she remembers) but with the weather still being on the chilly side and snow, would it be perfect? sure with her being a coldblood, the cold won't bother her in the slightest. although, it might be less fun for the other girl. ...ugh, well. she could always ask, right? )
( but before that, something romantic, spontaneous, yet subtle! and what way to show you have feelings for someone than music? she's been cycling through a lot for a few hours now until she comes across one that seems smooth. and so, she fires the tune off through her omni: )

Sure, she's at least heard the name through being stuck in this place, and having all sorts of cultures intermingling here. It means that she's heard about the general idea, but since she figured Jinx didn't bring it up, it must mean that it isn't a tradition in either of their worlds.
So.. that might make it weird to do something for it here, right? Wouldn't it be a little forced? In the end Chizuru ends up worrying so much that she doesn't plan anything at all--
Until she's the one suddenly receiving a message.
Apparently someone here did plan something for Valentine's Day after all, and it leaves Chizuru blushing and stunned for a moment as she listens to the song. ]
did you want to celebrate valentines day

For Daniel
Eventually he sits up and takes a look out the window. ...Shit. That was a lot of snow. He wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. His eyes glance around the room and it doesn't take him long to catch onto what's going on here. He had only recently done something like speed dating but he considered himself a master now.
He doesn't quite have a chance to open up his Omni before he does see a familiar face walking through the small crowded room.]
Keep walking, LaRusso. Unless you suddenly have a rack, I'm not interested.
[He means it in as friendly of a way as possible.]
no subject
But he does realise they're not going to get out of here any time soon. No, the entire reason he was walking was because he was trying the door, but it does seem like they're snowed in. No way out.
.. at least there isn't a monster, he tells himself as he moves to sit down on the other couch with a sigh. ]
That's rich, coming from a guy who constantly calls me Danielle.
[ There's no venom in the remark at all. Just faint exasperation at best as he glances around them, gaze not dropping to his Omni just yet. Maybe Daniel is hoping some magical door leading out will appear after all, or something like that. ]
Is this even for real?

Ange
Back in the dream, so many of her family members had come and gone at different points. She knew she had been lucky to see all of them again, but it didn't change the fact that she missed them dearly. She also was aware that there was likely no way of just returning home and seeing them again.
Whenever she thinks of home- She thinks of how she failed. She thinks of how she fell. The fact that there might not be any way of coming back from that.
She didn't want much. She just- Wanted the chance to say goodbye and that she was sorry.
It's when those thoughts start to bubble up that she realizes she can't move. That she's just sitting at the edge of the water with her arms wrapped around her legs.
And she isn't going anywhere.]
no subject
Sometimes it's better to leave the past in the past.
But there are other reasons to go out to the beach. Like the fact that it's getting late, and your wife isn't showing up. And Ruby not showing up for dinner without a single word is not the other's style at all, especially when she's aware how
fussyeasily worried Ange has been over the other's safety. So after waiting a little bit longer, Ange decides to go out and investigate. Their bond makes it a little bit easier - it means she doesn't even have to get her Omni out, instead just following the trail that Ruby's presence in her mind leaves behind, even if it's suspiciously quiet right now.
Following that hum leads her out towards the beach. Since it's getting later, most people already have left - taking their newly found loved ones along with them, the natives having packed up their welcoming gear.
It makes it very easy to spot a solitary figure still sitting out there on the beach. ]
Ruby!
[ Ange is still quite a distance away from the other, but since it's chilly, she figures she ought to call out already as she's slowly making her way over. Better to get home quick, right? Ruby may not feel the cold, being a coldblood and all, but Ange herself sure does, even while wrapped up in her winter coat. ]
Ruby, what are you still doing out here?

But then again, she hasn't noticed that she hasn't been noticing the cold. She hasn't been noticing much of anything, really, ever since she went into the woods for-- for some reason, and then couldn't quite remember why she went there ever since. The girl dismissed it, figuring that she was probably just trying to fight some monsters with the urge she's had over the past few months to be stronger, more capable of defending those close to her, and figured that is it.
But even though Ange isn't going to notice that something about her is off, maybe one of the people close to her might.
.. maybe even the one who's living together with her.
Not much about her looks off though. Ange may seem a little paler than the usual as she's sprawled out on the couch in their living room, reading a book, but the girl is usually pale enough already that it might not stand out much.
She does look up when she sees the other girl entering the house though, but only briefly before her gaze returns to her book. ]
Back already? [ From whatever it was Ruby was doing - perhaps making some weapons, or grabbing groceries, or something else.
Either way, Ange acting relatively detached isn't anything too weird, right. This is how Ange always pretends to be. ]
no subject
Yeah- It was a quiet day. Thought I'd pack it in early, you know? Spend some time with my special someone.
[Ruby felt like she knew Ange well enough to know that her being detached was something she'd mostly pull when Ruby was being sappy, not before. ...And less so in private by a mile.
Which is why when Ange goes back to her book Ruby slowly creeps toward the couch. Surely a hug from behind is exactly what the doctor ordered.]

Because someone hasn't forgotten. Daniel, more specifically, hasn't forgotten, but he isn't the one suddenly entering the guest room. No, the sound of quick yet soft pattering across the floor can only be one thing, and that thing is confirmed when a ball of fluffy fur suddenly launches itself on top of Robby's bed - and on top of the boy, starting to lick Robby's face either in an attempt to wake him up, or just to greet him...
What a way to start a birthday, huh. With dog slobber all over your face. If Robby manages to escape the tongue, he may spot though that the Omen isn't looking entirely the way it always does.
Because there's a small party hat perched on top of its head. ]
no subject
Except getting attacked by a shisa does. There Robby was, blissfully in sleepy land, before this bouncing ball of fur knocked him from whatever was happening in his dreams to the sensation of something wet.
There's some protests slurred, groggy, hands weakly trying to find something to push back without seeing or having the brain ready to process what's happening. But this attack is helping him to wake, and he does manage to get his hands eventually on shisa so he can squint at the pup. ...and see the hat on his head. ]
Wha...? [ oh. Oh.
Robby is stopping from any smile getting on his face by pressing his mouth deep into his cheek. He pushes shisa just enough so he can mumble a 'Go away' (affectionately) and bury his face back into his pillow.
He doesn't have to put up with whatever you and Mister LaRusso are planning, and you can't make him!!! ]

for peter
Besides, both Robby and Peter - they're good kids. Sure, apparently Peter has dealt with a lot, and Robby is dealing with a lot right now too, but Daniel believes in them enough to think they can figure this out together.
So it's only when the two are done with all of it that Daniel moves to approach Peter, perhaps right when it looks like the boy was about to leave. ]
Hey.
[ He gives him a small smile, trying to put the guy at ease. Especially when Daniel adds: ]
Do you mind if we talk for a moment too? [ Look, it's just.. Peter often seems really nervous, and Daniel doesn't want to set that off here, so he's trying to seem as amicable as possible.. ] It's nothing bad, I promise.
no subject
But sometimes, confrontation happens and you don't end up feeling like you want to disappear forever. Sometimes, you don't lose someone who's become precious to you. Peter's tired but not exhausted, not the way he usually is, and he's ultimately glad this all happened, because Robby's certainly someone who's become precious to him. He packs up his bag and shrugs into his coat, ready to head back, when Daniel approaches him and asks to talk.
It does cause a little flutter to dance up under his ribcage, and Peter's definitely looking a bit nervous, but Daniel clearly thought ahead with that, because adding the "it's nothing bad, I promise" does ease some of that kneejerk anxiety. Peter fiddles with the strap of his bag, gives a nod. )
Oh, sure— yeah, no problem. ( He moves back from the door, towards Daniel. He's definitely a little awkward with it, looking like he doesn't know where to go and just kind of glancing from side to side. Peter.... relax... )

[ The text gets sent, and it doesn't matter which day works for Chizuru, so long as one does. When it'll be just her and Robby, and her place is usually better for this. At least she won't have to walk home with whatever feelings he's going to leave in her head.
And as upsetting as it might be, well--he hopes it's not upsetting.
But when Robby comes and knocks on Chizuru's door, he may have a muted expression--muted, but not severely so--but he'll also have something else that'll be visible. ]
Hey, Chizu. Sorry about bad timing, but I got you these? Tell me where I can put them.
[ ...he also has some bags, which he lifts with 'these'. Look, he's a warmblood and this is February... ]

It makes her definitely look surprised when Robby shows up with those bags. But after blinking at them in surprise for a moment, she manages to pull herself back together to say: ] Um, over there on the table is fine..
[ W-What did he get her? Does it have something to do with what he wanted to talk about?
He seems so weirdly serious about it too, which makes Chizuru think that it's a serious topic, but then why.. the bags..
She's so concerned already, even as she gives Robby the room to walk in, closing the door behind him and following the boy. ]

for robby + chozen
Except today Daniel isn't talking to the puppy. No, when Robby walks further into the house, he may notice that Daniel isn't sitting by himself on the couch. Instead it seems that the person Daniel is engaged in - rather animated, judging by the energy about Daniel - conversation with is an actual person, an older-looking Japanese man.
Still, even with as engaged as Daniel seems in the conversation, he isn't exactly missing the figure entering the home. In fact, when he spots Robby, his face actually seems to light up with even more energy. ]
Right-- Robby, come here! I should introduce you.
[ Apparently Daniel is really happy about this introduction, if not outright excited.. his eyes are basically twinkling as he glances between the boy and the other man. Maybe Chozen already met Robby back home, but Daniel isn't too sure - it didn't seem likely that the boy would return to Miyagi-do, after all, even after the tournament. ]
Robby, this is Chozen. He just showed up here. He.. [ .. hm. How does Daniel introduce Chozen, thinking about it. Starting off with 'we had a karate death match one time' probably isn't great, huh. ] He's an old-- an old friend of mine.
[ Daniel says the word 'friend' like he's trying it out a little, something shy around its edges, or even just in the small smile he shoots in Chozen's direction as he says it before looking back at Robby instead. ]
He teaches Miyagi-do back over in Okinawa. [ There, that feels relevant enough.
.. though, on the other hand, he also has the same problem introducing Robby, doesn't he. Daniel knows what Robby is to him, but since he hasn't exactly told the boy yet, it's not like he can just say it here so plainly. So.. ]
And Chozen, this is Robby. He's my student, and he's staying here with me. [ Please don't read too hard into that last part.. Daniel reliving his own past?? More likely than you'd imagine.
Though that statement doesn't feel quite adequate to express the full sense of what Robby means to him, and in lieu of not being able to use the s-word here-- ]
He's my favourite.
[ Nailed it. Look at that fond smile you're getting from mister LaRusso, Robby. ]
no subject
Maybe a thought for half a second, but Robby doesn't place his bets on that when he hears the animated talking after he enters. Setting down his bag and taking off his boots so as not to drag wet snow into the house, Robby only means to nose for a second who it is that's come over than to listen in on anything, or even stay. Maybe it's a face he knows or not--but he can say hi regardless, then leave Mister LaRusso to it.
Except he doesn't get to, when Mister LaRusso sets his sights on him. Robby glances at the back of the unknown head but walks more into the room to be better seen, and to get a better look at the other man, too. It's not often his sensei gets excited, and the explanations he gets into isn't that surprising. But a friend of his from home? That's good; a surprise that it happened, but a good surprise, considering how the man's been without faces he knows.
(And, you know. That aren't his dad or Silver.)
Robby's brows do lift curiously at the mention of the man being a sensei from Okinawa, a question already on his tongue, but Mister LaRusso is going into further introductions. He'd give his greetings, but sensei says what he does, and Robby laughs a little, ducking his head, then raising it with a tugged on smile. ]
I'm his favourite 'til his next favourite rolls in. [ He'd say Sam, but he knows not to go there. But it's a tease about Daniel's character, before Robby asks after a beat: ] So uh, are you a Miyagi?
[ Is that an American thing to ask. ]

cw: there will be a big mean snake in this thread
All that said, Break also keeps a web of alliances around the town that extends out into the farms and gardens that lay past the Trenchwood. Break likes food, and has a great many people he likes to feed, too. Since that's the case it's only sensible to make sure the people who produce the food really like him, and so it is that he's spent his afternoon out at one of the farms that keeps chickens, using his darkblood to install miniature thorn hedges around the bottoms of the chicken coops. This time of year when food is scarce, certain weaseley predators get cunning.
It's been a satisfying day. February's blood problem has given him an urge to be helpful whenever he can be, and he's been rewarded for his assistance with a couple of freshly slaughtered chickens to take home and cook up for supper. Ange has come along with him, bribed with the promise that he'll show her how to make teriyaki for dinner, Break having gotten the hang of it himself a couple of weeks ago. Her company is a welcome addition to the walk between the Waystation lamp and the farm, and he's very much looking forward to settling in at home for another long, cold night.
Halfway to the lamp, however, Baltus — who spends these sorts of walks scouting around, keeping an eye out for danger — makes an unpleasant discovery. Just a few feet off the path, there lies the corpse of a very large snake, easily big enough to unhinge its jaw and consume a grown man in one go. It has horns on its face reminiscent of an ordinary viper, but the thing is clearly a beast. And it’s laying with its mouth open, belly up, cold and still.
"That wasn't here on the way in, was it?" Break asks, eyeing the thing with deep suspicion. Subconsciously, he places himself between Ange and the snake. But he's already casting his senses outward, not convinced they are alone.
It was not, Baltus agrees. Speaking Break's thoughts aloud, the omen eyes them solemnly as he adds, There are no marks on the body, so it must have died naturally. Even so, the corpse will attract others.
"Right by the path, too." Break frowns. "If the area isn't cleared out properly, someone's going to get eaten tonight, no doubt."
He does not know, nor does Baltus, that some snakes are capable of playing dead to fool predators…or prey, in this case. While he debates whether to secure the area himself or shuffle Ange to safety and make it the Hunters' problem, the snake waits patiently to see which of these warm bodies will stray within striking distance first.
no subject
That one clearly isn't going to hurt anyone anymore - or so she thinks.
It's a calming thought. Because facing a monster out here by herself is something Ange can do without too much worry at this point, especially knowing that she does always have a relatively easy out by turning herself into butterflies, but it's a lot more worrying when she's with someone else. Even when it's Break, and when she knows the man certainly isn't a pushover in any single sense of that word. But when there's even the faintest risk he could get hurt in the scuffle -- then Ange doesn't want one bit of it.
It's the reason behind her reaction here. Behind the way she stares at the snake for a few moments before she's already shaking her head, staring at Break's back.
"Let's just leave it."
Maybe under different circumstances Ange would have said they should at least do something to it to keep this path relatively clear for whoever else may travel down it later - at her core the girl is much kinder than she'd ever admit to out loud, after all.
But the past few months have left her tense, much more wound up than usually. It feels like there's less time to think about the common good, because she has to spend more time instead thinking of the good of the people she cares about most. She isn't going to risk Break for people she doesn't even know.
"Someone else will deal with it." And then they won't be the ones sticking around here, risking another monster pouncing them while dealing with the dead snake. That can be someone else's problem.

Chozen had mentioned something about Miyagi-do, back on the boardwalk, and so to Miyagi-do Ariane goes. She arrives there one late afternoon in mid-February, still thin and tired-looking, but nonetheless happy to be there. She leans on a cane with one side of her body, and with her free hand, knocks on the door. To whoever answers, she says: ]
Hello. I'm Ariane. Is this dojo accepting new students?
no subject
Once the man does open the gate and lays eyes on Ariane though, there's a brief moment of surprise. It's nothing too big - mostly muted - but.. well, he didn't quite expect to see someone looking so thin. Almost battered, somewhere between that cane and the tired look on the other's face. ]
Of course we do. [ He smiles as he says that though. Not Daniel's wide car-salesman-grin, but something a little softer, and followed up by a nod. Ariane may not look like the typical sort of person to pick up karate, but.. well, if she wants to try, he sure isn't going to turn her away. Anyone who wants to try out Miyagi-do can do so.
He steps back, allowing her to step through the gate if she so wishes, heading down the path next to the house towards the dojo in the yard. ]
Want to come in?
[ Daniel figures it's probably a little easier to discuss things somewhere she can sit down, judging by the cane.. They can probably sit on the backdoor steps. ]

But it never really felt like the right moment to actually talk about this, and-- right now, it still doesn't, not with all these sudden shifts in Robby's life.
On the other hand, it's kind of hard to not talk about it when he took the boy into his home once more. When he threw him a birthday party. When he spends so much time with him. It's like it's getting more awkward the longer he waits with actually saying this.
So maybe he should just do that. Maybe he should just say it, but even that is harder than that statement might imply.
It's been about a week since Daniel got the idea of taking this time to say it. A week of preparations. Of moments where he was home alone spent talking to himself, playing out an imaginary conversation, trying to find the right words to use and answers to potential questions.
It feels like it did absolutely nothing for him. He feels just as clueless as to how to properly pull this off as he has for months when he hears the sound of the front door opening and closing, knowing that Robby just came home - but he has to do it, right?
It's now or never.
So Daniel inhales, exhales, tries to find his balance even as it feels so far away in this moment. He waits until Robby's gone through the hallway, passing by the living room area where Daniel is sitting on the couch to call out. ]
Hey-- Robby?
[ He calls out the other's name, and regardless of any answer, he pauses for a moment to make sure the other heard that before Daniel continues with: ]
Could you come here for a moment? I have something I want to talk about with you. [ God, he already feels so awkward and dumb and he hasn't even said it yet. ]

Bring on spring, even if all it'll remove are two parts of his ensemble. But this is what occupies Robby's attention mostly, when he first enters. The bag, that he'll be taking to his room (his room, spare room, same difference), with the few books he's gotten and....other things. Things that don't make it to the room when Robby hears his name, a 'Yeah, I'm back' answered in turn, and then more follows.
Obliviously, Robby backtracks enough to come to the doorway leading into the living room, leaning with a hand on the door frame. A politeness to his voice, even with the casual language involved. ]
What's up, Mister LaRusso?
[ He will come more into the room if the man asks, even if he just thinks he needs to stand better in view before taking a seat--opting for whichever comes first than being picky about his choice, unless Mister LaRusso asks him t sit somewhere in particular.
Then he'll comply, always wearing the same look of curiosity. ]
