And those words make Lexi's eyebrows arch. "That's...awfully reductive. Like saying that because there's a piano and because there are the works of Chopin, I should be able to play his music. Or that I shouldn't play at all. And that if I don't manage to do it, trying didn't count for anything."

"That's what it sounds like, isn't it? It's an old saying in the Order by someone both very wise and very sparse with words. The saying is supposed to mean something along the lines of: if you're going to do something, don't just try. If you 'try,' you assume you can fail completely. If you 'do,' you might not succeed at the main objective, but you'll still succeed at learning something valuable."

"Okay, that makes a little more sense. Sort of the whole 'shoot for the moon, if you don't make it, you'll still be among the stars' thing" But don't ask her where she first heard that saying, not unless he's willing to hear all about first grade.
Actually, first grade might not be too bad. High school, on the other hand, wasn't worth mentioning.

"You know, I think that might be a better way to put it."

"Thought so. Mom told it to us once. It always seemed...kinda nice? To be among the stars?"

He thinks wistfully of flying with his father.

The thought of being stuck on one planet indefinitely makes him feel claustrophobic. It's one of the big downsides to the Trench.

While for her, Trench is so weird and so unlike anything she'd ever imagined before, she's always finding new and exciting things.

Some bad ones too, of course, but that's just life.
"It turns out that my mother's side of the family has some incredible pilots too."
no subject
When it comes to family? She knows that feeling.
"Really? Are they here?"

He's never seen his grandfather fly, granted, but he did win the Boonta Eve Classic (which he guess is important) at age nine.

She'd love to know her grandparents. Any of them. Suze didn't get along with her parents, so Lexi had never met them. And her dad? He wasn't around anymore and neither were his parents.
no subject
"That's true. Though I don't think people change that drastically the older they get."
no subject
"Really? I'm not sure I agree. I have an--an old friend, Rue. She's changed a lot over the years." And not for the better. She wanted to help Rue, but Lexi knew she couldn't save her from herself.
