FIGHT OR FLIGHT
WHEN: December
WHERE: Throughout Trench, particularly near the woods.
CONTENT WARNINGS: Paranoia, fear, violence, possible murder, reality questioning

Dorothea seems to be off. She's more skittish than usual, even to those she may have formed even the slightest of connections to. Her own patrons will notice that she still acts like a cornered animal whenever someone gets too close. Her hair might puff up, she shrinks back from touch, and she's quick to bite if she feels she has to defend herself. People can put two and two together pretty easily: whatever illness that has made the Tower so odd has spread out to others.

The fear she's feeling will slowly start to spread out through the month. Those who have Dorothea as their patron Pthumerian will start to feel the impacts earlier than others, but soon it's going out into the general Sleeper population. It starts off with a tiny voice in the back of the mind, one that alerts danger, even if there isn't anything immediately threatening in the area. It's quiet at first, but becomes louder and louder, until the fear becomes overwhelming.

People will start to respond to it with their natural instincts of fight, flight, or freeze. Some people might try to blend into the background and keep away from strong social settings. Others might start to lash out, fighting with anyone who crosses their path because they could be the threat. People can even go so far as to try to kill those they're close to simply because they don't trust them to be safe.

But that rational side might still try to break through. The constant tug of war can leave people questioning what's real, where the danger really is coming from, or if there was any danger to begin with. It's hard to get the answers or to calm down enough to look for concrete proof when the heart is racing as fast as it is, clouding the mind from being able to handle reason.

If a Sleeper fights their natural instinct and tries to trust others, the effects seem to lessen, but they never fully go away. The small underlying feeling of fear will be there throughout the month, no matter how hard someone tries to fight it.

Note: Not everyone will be hit by this curse. You may opt-out by simply having your character not be effected. For those who are already dealing by paranoia or distrust from their blood impacts, the effects will be that much stronger and more difficult to fight, and more likely to escalate to violence.

COLD AS ICE
WHEN: December
WHERE: ???
CONTENT WARNINGS: Possible drowning, being trapped under ice, claustrophobia

It feels like a dream, but the world around is so solid and real, it's hard to tell if that's true. Everything is pitch black at first and the Sleeper stuck in this new place will feel a heavy weight on their chest. What's most noticeable right off the bat is how cold it is. Colder than it was back in Trench, an almost stabbing pain all over the skin, and it wouldn't be over the top to worry about frost bite. The pressure that's pushing onto the Sleeper's chest will become more noticeable all around them, like there's some sort of vice grip on their entire body.

A beam of moonlight breaks through the darkness and it's then that they are able to tell where they are: under water. Trapped under the ice of a large lake, one where shore seems completely out of reach. Swimming to the top will make it clear that while the ice has cracks on the very surface of it, they're superficial, and it may feel difficult to break through. Trying to use powers to break through the ice will make it clear very quickly that powers don' work in this water.

Is this it? Is that the end? Continuing to swim to try and find a hole may feel pointless, but those who choose to will eventually find that they run into another Sleeper or two. It's hard to communicate underwater, likely, especially when it seems like the omnis don't work to project thoughts to one another the way they usually do. But if the Sleepers can figure out how to communicate, they might find that coordinating their movements to push up against the ice will start to make a loud, rumbling noise fill the water.

The ice is starting to crack. It just takes team work.

Fighting one another or resisting will bring about the very obvious feeling of drowning. Even those who can breathe under water will find that they are unable to in these moments. The only option to get out is to work as a team. So long as they cooperate, Sleepers can break a hole through the ice, escaping the frozen water.

Crawling through the hole in the ice will bring them out of a manhole in a random street of Trench. The lake will be gone and the water too. Those who don't crawl out fast enough behind their teammates will find that the hole disappears entirely and they're forced to start all over.

NOW YOU SEE ME
WHEN: December
WHERE: Trenchwood
CONTENT WARNINGS: Murder, demons, supernatural, violence, abuse, other awful fairy tale themes

There's one thing that's always nice about the holiday seasons lining up across so many worlds: people get to share the stories of their homelands with one another. Traditions are passed down, legendary figures are explained. People will find that they're even more compelled to share stories from their home, whether it's about a winter holiday they deeply enjoy, or even fairy tales that they were told as children. Th urge to share will feel completely natural, even if it's just to one person rather than a whole group.

But there's always a catch in Trench. As stories are shared, the figures that they're focused on will start to manifest throughout the city as actual, real beings. Santa Claus, shoemaking elves, Snow Queens... Anything is up for grabs, but they won't be exactly like the figures that people spoke of. Their eyes will glow a deep red and their skin will be covered in bleeding wounds, dripping red paths across the snow. These strange versions of these legendary beings will haunt the streets of Trench, attacking anyone they see who doesn't look like them.

It will become clear that there's violent demons about as Trenchies (or even Sleepers) start to show up dead in the snow. Their deaths never seem to be gentle, but instead a clear product of a frenzied blood lust. People may have been brutally stabbed, or ripped to pieces and scattered. Even if the characters in a Sleeper's story were good people, even heroes, their Trench counterparts only want to destroy.

Killing these demons at least seems to be extremely easy. Luring them in with a blood sacrifice is probably the simplest, but people can try to find them and corner them throughout the city as well. Destroy their eyes and the demons will vanish. This can be done by attacking the face directly or by cutting off the head and destroying it. This information is not readily available however, so it will have to be done by trial and error until Sleepers can start to share the information with one another as the month goes on.

"I can understand that." He's pretty sure nothing has or would change at home either. Even a monstrous surge of aether changing landscapes and biomes didn't really affect home much. If that didn't, he's not sure what would. "Something like that. There was a Calamity of Water perviously. Nearly the whole world flooded. The cause was a war between magick-wielding nations."

He could go on for a long time about the War of the Magi, but for Dabi's sake he'll leave it there. "There's a lot we still don't know about the exact relationship between the Source and the reflections. And the people who know the most about them are... dead. Unfortunately."

Mostly by his own hand. Almost exclusively, in fact.

"Didn't have a good home life?" Dabi's next toss into the fire sees a faint lick of blue flames off his fingers following the cloth and he turns his attention back to that. Better. Focusing for a few seconds, finally something gives and the same azure fire he's so known for flares up in his hand. Took the damn thing long enough to wear off. "Wouldn't be a lot of nations left if the whole world almost flooded." Fancy that, people fighting each other even after almost being completely wiped out.

Nara'a can regale him with more tales of his world's strange people the next time they're stuck somewhere alone and cold. Satisfied his Quirk's returned, Dabi tosses the rest of the fabric scraps into the fire and leans back on his hands in a more comfortable posture. Back to normal. "Dead for a reason or one of those "ages ago" kinda reasons?"

Were they killed for their knowledge or time simply keeps marching on...

"It was all right by the typical standards, I think. A lot of teasing, as I'm a miserable hunter. But I wasn't going to learn what I needed to learn by staying - and men of my subspecies tend to leave home as soon as they're of an age where they can fend for themselves. Keeper of the Moon men don't lead tribes or even stay with them, they just mate and move on." It sounds strange to some, but he finds the idea of having a father around a strange concept in turn. "And there weren't. The era after that lasted a long while."

The event that ended it... well. He lived through it. So did many others. But many didn't and some places were forever changed.

How to explain? "... They opposed me and my fellow Scions. They wanted to make the world as it once was, and rejoin all the shards with the Source. But it would have killed everyone on those worlds... so we couldn't let that happen. One by one they opposed us, and one by one they fell."

"Ya seem to do well enough here." Though in this case, "hunting" was more akin to fighting off the things that tried to do you harm. Dabi's seen Nara'a's skills, so it's a bit strange to think he's "miserable" as a hunter. Could certainly earn a kill with those powers. If he weren't such a damn pacifist most of the time. "Ain't too much different for humans. We tend to leave home around a certain age for different reasons." Some for school, others for jobs, others for emotions, the list goes on.

"Basically a buncha geezers wanted to renew the glory days and wipe out all the stupid young people they didn't like." And of course the youth didn't like that idea, so time to commit a genocide of the old power. "No matter what world ya live in, it's always the same power struggle. Kinda amusin."

He laughs a little bit. "Not hunting down monsters, but hunting with a bow and arrow. It's how I got this scar on my nose." He rubs it gingerly with his thumb, sighing a bit. "Nothing exciting, just a mishap with a bow string that never quite healed." Unfortunately the story behind that scar is a little lame, so the story's not really worth telling.

"I know a lot of races have their children leave home at around the same age, yeah." Only the high houses of Ishgard really have their children hang around, and that's more of a lordly status symbol than anything else - though they have duties of their own.

That assessment... isn't quite wrong, though it isn't fully right. It's a bit reductive, but he's not in the mood to get into the particulars. "They didn't even consider us people, for the most part." Just pawns and playthings. "You're dealing with that sort of thing too? I know you've spoken a little about the coming battles in your world..." But framing it as 'young versus old' is a different sort of story.

"You're supposed to point the arrow away from yourself when ya fire, idiot." No wonder he wasn't good at hunting if he's giving himself scars with a damn bow and arrow. Though when Nara'a clarifies how it happened... eh, he's not gonna fix that in his head. Far more amusing to think the guy somehow shot himself across the face with an arrow.

"Only cowards or prisoners don't leave their homes eventually." Dabi might not be the most unbiased person to judge others, but at least he's aware of how most humans tend to run their lives.

"That bad, huh." The elders in power looking down on those weaker and younger than them. Yeah, he recognizes that kind of ideology. Not to the same extent, but it's applicable in his life. Dabi tilts his head back, looking up at the ceiling. "Somethin like that. It's more oppressed versus the oppressors. Corruption and startin anew."

"Yeah, I know that much, smartass." He huffs in amusement. He's aware that Dabi's going to tease him about it - but that's fine. He's used to it.

He disagrees with Dabi but doesn't say so verbally. He just raises an eyebrow - it depends what he means by both in particular. "Oppressed people do deserve a chance to control their own fates. It's just a struggle to make sure that they don't become the new oppressors. You got a plan in place to prevent that?"

He's not going to tell Dabi that he spoke to Deku about this, but he's... still curious as to Dabi's perspective on this. He's not going to get anywhere unless he understands the other.

"Embarrassin way to learn it." Dabi flops down on his back, stretching his arms over his head for a few seconds until his shoulders pop, then tucks his hands under his head and rests all long and lanky in front of the fire.

"Me? Nah. That ain't somethin I give a shit about. People are people and they're gonna be dicks regardless of who's in control. If ya wanna fight for the freedom of everyone to do what they want, then ya gonna run into freedom overlappin. Just a matter of might makes right then." There's no way to stop oppression. It simply swings back and forth between hands.

Sure, he has some ideas on how that could be handled, but those are ideas that he tossed aside a long time ago. People who don't have a long time to live don't really involve themselves with "the future" of society.

"It was. It caused years of teasing too." Which... he probably deserved. At least, he thinks so. A Moon Keeper who can't hunt is not much good to their tribe... it probably contributed to him leaving home for other pursuits.

"I don't much care for 'might makes right', though I don't much care for overly-restrictive rules in place either. If you could guarantee that everyone's going to use sense to guide their actions... but you simply can't do that. Not everyone will be responsible. ... And even if they are, they can make mistakes."

He unfortunately has to think about that sort of thing... when so many look to him as an example. He's expected to have ideas. "You'd sit pretty high in a might makes right world, though."

"Ya seem like you take teasin pretty easily." Not someone who got ruffled too much, though Dabi's needled Nara'a a few times already in their adventures. Though on the other hand, "hunting" in general doesn't always mean meat or animals, and he's seen Nara'a hunt down a few things already. He isn't that bad... Not that Dabi'll admit such.

"That's just the nature of people," the villain retorts dryly. Two large extremes: anarchy that ultimately devolves into might-makes-right and then tyranny which results in too many restrictions. "There's a balance between anarchy and tyranny, but humans can't reach it as a whole cause they're humans." Dabi's not sure if Nara'a considers himself separate from "humans" as a race since he's a miqo'te, but at the same time, he's spoken inclusively before, so... who knows.

The compliment earns a brief snort from the burned man. "My world's already might makes right. Heroes are the victors, and thus they make the laws to enforce their way of thinkin. No matter who gets crushed as a result." He lifts his hand, looking at the staples in his skin, gleaming in the firelight. "I'm pretty close to the bottom of that hierarchy. S'why I'm lookin forward to burnin it all down."

[personal profile] aetherweaver 2023-03-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"I had to learn." There was really no other option. And then the teasing he got from his comrades afterwards.s.. it just seemed natural to him. Better than how he grew up, at least. And to be fair he means hunting for meat and skins with a bow and arrow, not other options. It's what he thinks of when he says 'hunting'.

He huffs in amusement - and a little frustration. "All we can do is lead by example and hope that others follow. I don't like flexing my strength in most cases where I'm called on to do it. Playing the 'silent and worldly adventurer' isn't really my style, even if it does describe me." But as for people never getting there... he's not sure. There'll always be a range, of course... but he has faith in people to do the right thing most of the time.

"You're at the bottom because you oppose them, or because of a different reason?" He knows very well that Dabi wants to burn down everything.. but maybe he can be convinced to shift his thinking. Not far - he's realistic, not an idiot - but maybe a little.

Dabi grunts in response, accepting it. There were elements of teasing in the League, mostly from Toga and Twice, and the burned villain was pretty quick to show he wasn't someone who could be teased easily. Too sarcastic and "don't care" to respond to it. Or if they got too annoying, he wasn't afraid of threatening their lives either to make them back off.

"Depends on who thinks what example is right." Always the contentious argumentative type. But that's because in Dabi's world, it's only the heroes that go on about shit like "leading by example" and encouraging others to follow. And that only when said "example" is what's considered good and best by the heroes and other people in power. "Sometimes flexin ya strength is the only way to make other people realize some examples aren't the best to follow."

The question earns a lazy lift of his shoulders and Dabi settles his head on his hands once against, spiky black hair spearing between his fingers. "Mostly the first. Villains are the only ones who see somethin wrong with that fuckin society. And no one likes breakin the status quo, no matter how fragile and fake it is."
