Reckoning is upon them now and he tries to tug on Keith again, a watery and desperate quality entering his voice. An unhinged and familiar edge of grief and agony that's not fully left him for years breaking through.]
There's never any real guarantees! What if you don't come back?! What if I lose you again!? I can't- I can't just walk away! And you wouldn't either! Why? Why are you just giving up when I-
[He's cut off by Reckoning raising her sword and he half snarls, half sobs as he steps forward and releases a massively dense and bright star from his hands to meet her blade and try to slow it down with gravitational force.]

You just made yourself a target!
[Keith didn't want to talk about the rest of that. Honestly, Lance was right. He wouldn't walk away, either. Not for Lance, not for Shiro, not for anyone he cared about. Keith clenched his jaw and then reached out to grab Lance now. No. No, no, no... Lance was not going to die for him. He shoved him back, away from the Reckoning, keeping them moving along the beach again in an attempt to get some distance.
After a few yards, he pulled out his knife, holding it to Lance.]
Then you do it. If you do it, she'll forgive you if you take me out.

They don't have much time, she's going to get her hands on it and either he's going to try to slow her again or he's gonna convince Keith to run. Deep down he knows running is pointless. The Reckoning won't stop. But he's not always the most rational even on an average day and there's powerful enhanced feelings for Keith warping his better judgement.
And then Keith's sharp emotional state as he realizes what Lance did and what it means jerks his focus to him. And he sees the knife, hears the words, looks between Keith and the blade being held out to him. Not comprehending at first what he's asking. And then it hits. All at once, his chest and lungs constrict and his vision narrows, he's panicking, looking at Keith and his knife in abject horror, he starts to glow. Then flashes of Allura, and others, but especially her. When he thrust his sword in her chest… when she thanked him after. A memory that's become distorted and enhanced by psychosis.
He feels a scream trapped somewhere in his chest cavity, but also like he's going to be sick, his eyes dart around in panic, seeing things not there. And they focus on Keith again and he flinches away at what he sees, clutching at his head.]
N-no, no! Sh-shut up, he doesn't- doesn't mean that… [He takes in a sharp breath as he sees the very real shadow of Reckoning return to look over them, furious. They're out of time. Out of time.] NO NO! ENOUGH!
[On raw, wild instinct, he goes to grab Keith by the middle, hoisting him to his shoulder and then he uses his powers to rocket them further down the beach. But he's out of focus and erratic and his control is extremely sloppy, and when that happens, his powers harm him. He stumbles out of the high speed escape a ways down the beach and they both go painfully skidding and tumbling across the sand.]

Lance! LANCE! Listen to me!
[But he wasn't getting through. And now Keith was really scared. He was scared she was going to get him, too, and he reached out on instinct to push Lance away in the hope that maybe he could just get enough distance between them that Lance could run before she made another attempt to attack. But he didn't. He couldn't. Lance snapped and bum rushed him, grappling his waist and lifting him up off the ground.]
What are you-?! [And they were suddenly flying through the air, with no sense of control, and Keith couldn't see where they were going. All he could do was hold on and squeeze his eyes shut, bracing for what he was sure was going to be an eventual impact.
He wasn't wrong. He felt Lance's feet hit the sand hard, but the soft ground gave way too easily, causing him to sink and stumble and eventually fall, sending them both sprawling across the beach.
Ow.
Keith groaned, clenching his teeth against the stinging scrapes that had black sand and sea salt dug into his skin, and pushed himself up. They'd certainly gotten some distance. His gripped his blade tighter in his hand, gingerly getting to his feet and heaving air in and out of his lungs.]
We can't... keep doing this... She's not. Going. To stop.
no subject
It doesn't matter, though. It's not new damage. And as Keith is saying… she really isn't going to stop. Deep down, he does know he's delaying the inevitable, but he doesn't care. He just needs even one more moment with him to… to. He doesn't know, he's going on pure instinct at this point.
And now they have this thing hanging between them, this horrifying idea Keith has had that he- Lance's hands go up to his head and tangle in his hair again. Then, he reaches out and grabs the front of Keith's shirt with a rough and wild desperation.]
You… you don't understand. What you're asking me to do. Please- [His breath hitches wetly as he shakes, eyes going glassy and distant.] Don't a-ask me that.
no subject
I don't know what else to do.
[He sounded desperate.]
Lance, please... don't get killed because of me.
no subject
I'd rather die than hurt you, Keith!
[He can't even bring himself to say the word 'kill', replacing it with 'hurt'. And once that's out, and he realizes the raw truth of it, hitting his psyche like a truck, he barks out a broken and unhinged little giggle that mixes into heavy breathed almost sobs.]
I'd- I'd like to die. Heh. I've done it before, right?? S-sounds nice.
[The Reckoning is a god and she hardly needs to chase them, she can appear as soon or as late as she desires, and it would seem their time is just about up. Again.]

It was then that Reckoning had put up with enough of their little game. She was there in an instant, sword ready, and thrust it through from his back. It didn't matter to her. Justice was served. She'd done what was right, regardless of whether it was face-to-face or not.
Keith dropped to the sand as she pulled it free, turning her attention now on Lance... who had aided her target, tried to defy her justice...
But Keith didn't die right away, of course. That would be too merciful. He'd fallen on his side, bleeding heavily from a fatal wound in his gut. She'd run him straight through, almost dead center. It was excruciating at first. But, he started to go numb fairly quickly with the speed that he was losing blood. Pale blue liquid pooled and turned to ice on the sand...]

No, nononono. Y-you're okay, I can- I can… [He can what? Already, his powers have flared to massive strength around them both, he unconsciously shifts it into as much of a barrier as he can. To buy time. He's not thinking anymore and his powers go wild, not just outward, but inward as well. His cells are visibly being torn to shreds along his neck but he doesn't seem to feel it. All his focus is on Keith.
He pulls him close, careful of his wound and uses his powers on the wound to try and cauterize it, stop the bleeding. A second later, he pulls his glove off his other hand with his teeth and places his hand on Keith's cheek to take his pain. He's crying, welling up at his water line, but unable to go further as they're instantly evaporated.]
P-please. You said you- you wouldn't go. [His voice is wet and breaking all over as he's lost the capacity to be fully rational. Something about that seems to give The Reckoning pause. It likely also doesn't help that Mariana roils behind her and an eldritch whisper comes from her depths that has Reckoning looking over her shoulder slightly.]
no subject
So, I'll... I'll just... come back...
[He mumbled something, it came out as a breathy whisper, but then managed to repeat it.] You'll be fine. You're stronger than you think...
[Keith closed his eyes, leaning into Lance's chest.]

And corruption is fast building, his eye glowing blue as his scars open up again to reveal space beneath his skin. He doesn't care. His voice comes out warped when he speaks.] No, no n-not- I can hear it. The deep, it- it.
[Keith's pain and his emotions are still flowing into him and that isn't helping, he's taking too much, all of it. He doesn't care. He sees the cold blood spreading fast and unable to freeze because… because Lance is too hot. Keith's blood can't crystalize and stop flowing because of him.] I-I…
[He can't answer Keith's faith in his "strength" as he doesn't at all feel strong right now, he's coming apart at the seams mentally and physically. And he's just gone and made it all worse and he can't go back. He clutches Keith to himself tight and protective and shakes, sobs.] I-I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
[His chest is starting to cave in.]

Lance...
Lance, please...
I'm not... [Keith closed his eyes.] I'm not... I... you... [But he couldn't talk anymore. It was too much. He was losing consciousness.] Lance...
[Keith went limp.]
cw: suicide by Pthumerian, beasthood gore
And then all too soon, Keith goes fully limp in his arms. His breath catches and he leans back to brush at his face with his thumb. If the sudden dead weight and boneless quality to his body wasn't indicator enough, the sudden loss of pain and emotional input from his continued contact with his skin sure told him exactly what happened. He leans back to look at Keith's face, flashes of the last time he held a dead teammate and someone he loved overwhelming and overlaying in his mind.
His breath starts to come out uneven and distorted as he physically distorts from his powers and corruption. His teeth elongate and his eyes start to glow bright as he hunches over. A burst of blood and gore goes all over the beach as his chest cavity collapses and then erupts. A black hole begins to materialize where his heart should be in his open ribcage.
With his last conscious thought before beasthood fully takes hold, he turns to The Reckoning with a disturbing jerkiness. She appears as still and contemplative as her estranged lover, sword to the side as though she might plan to leave him there. That's how he reads it, anyway. And he doesn't want her to, he doesn't want to live and he doesn't care how it happens. When he speaks, his voice is distorted with an overlay of a beast and an undercurrent of a broken little kid.]
Either you kill me here and now or we're about to find out just how much of the city I can take with me when I go off.
[He's not entirely in touch with the fact that he's transforming. It feels almost like when he lets his powers loose… but there's a difference as well, he's just too overwhelmed and messed up to notice it. The Reckoning regards him a moment and Mariana seems to no longer have much of an opinion when the god of justice seems to listen for it. Then, without a moment's hesitation or any sign of remorse of conflict, her blade comes up and is pierced down through his back and the core of where his heart was. For good measure, she lifts it again and slices open his throat, nearly fully beheading him.
All at once, the energy he was letting off disappears as he collapses over onto his side, his arms are still around Keith, his mangled, partially transformed corpse curled around his head. The Reckoning turns to Mariana with a stiff, unhappy look, the exchange a few words and Mariana seems to take some amusement from the other god's conflicted displeasure. She is more powerful and that star boy is hers, besides, The Reckoning got what she wanted in the end.]
